For Nuru Solutions, in partnership with World Vision Somalia/SomReP, ILRI, Wadaag Group and SomRIL, SoMAP developed the technical framework for delineating Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZs) and Units of Area of Insurance (UAIs) for the FIRM II index-based livestock insurance initiative in Puntland. The analysis covered approximately 154,361 km² across Nugaal, Bari and Mudug, using 20 years of daily observations (2005–2025) and indicators from 1,783 GPS sampling points. Principal Component Analysis and K-means clustering identified five data-driven ecological zones, with strong cluster validation (mean bootstrap-adjusted Rand index 0.9163; overall positive silhouette rate 92.3%). A decision-support dashboard presented AEZ boundaries, administrative overlays, climate and vegetation trends, and zone-level descriptions for implementation partners.

Somalia has national biodiversity commitments but little state-level evidence to act on them. SoMAP specialists are contributing to Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans for Galmudug, Hirshabelle and South West State. Each state is treated as its own ecological unit, while a common method keeps the three plans comparable.

Climate information changes practice only when it reaches the right people, in their language, through a channel they actually use. SoMAP is contributing to a nine-week assignment across three federal member states that develops climate, land degradation and biodiversity awareness materials by starting from audiences and channels rather than from content.

Hobyo is shaped by drought; Barawe by floods. SoMAP is running a two-track assignment in both districts. The first track is a probability-based baseline survey that measures outcome indicators against a comparison group. The second is a spatial diagnostic that narrows a long list of candidate community clusters to a final, defensible set. Household evidence feeds directly into the vulnerability analysis, so the maps are not built on remote sensing alone.

In central Somalia, degraded rangeland and contested grazing land are often the same problem. SoMAP's technical team contributed to a feasibility study and conflict analysis covering 13 villages in Galkacyo, Dhusamareeb and Abudwak districts (Galmudug) and Feerfeer village in Beletweyn District (Hirshabelle). We combined satellite and terrain analysis with interviews, focus groups and participatory mapping, then turned the evidence into siting rules, so that each village received restoration measures suited both to its landscape and to its local relations.

As Associate Consultant with Mandek Consulting Ltd., SoMAP supported NADFOR (Government of Somaliland) on Making Somaliland Disaster Resilient: National Disaster Risk Assessment (NDRA), implemented with support from the GIZ-funded RDRM programme. The assessment provides a national evidence base for disaster-risk reduction, preparedness, risk-informed development and prioritisation of resilience investments across Somaliland’s six regions. Analysis covered drought, floods, locusts, extreme heat, Prosopis juliflora and cyclones, together with exposure, vulnerability, coping capacity and community-level risk, combining desk analysis, consultations and Participatory Disaster Risk Assessments in 12 villages.
